I'm reading the steroids book, Game of Shadows, and it's no hymn to Barry Bonds. But it does describe an undercover agent on the case as claiming that a special IRS agent named Novitzky, the driving force behind the investigation:
"...already suspected Bonds was juicing, and wanted to prove it. The IRS agent wasn't a Bonds fan, White said. 'He's such an asshole to the press,' White claimed Novitzky said."
If this is true, it may lend some credence to Bonds's assertion of being targeted for racist reasons. Sounds like the guy didn't like Bonds's "attitude." I've heard Bob Costas, among others, ridicule the notion that race has anything to do with Bonds's legal problems. But one has to wonder if it were McGwire going for the record, would some federal agent have such a hard-on to take him down.
